Nestled along the scenic Snoqualmie River, approximately two miles north of the City of Carnation, the Stossel Bridge Right Bank Revetment plays a crucial role in protecting public infrastructure, private property, and essential road access. However, years of persistent erosion have taken a toll on this vital structure, necessitating urgent repairs. Later this year, construction will begin on the Stossel Revetment Major Repair Project to restore its strength while also enhancing the natural habitat of the area.

Why This Project Matters
The Stossel Bridge Right Bank Revetment safeguards a King County road that serves as the sole access point for two private properties. Additionally, it protects utilities, agricultural land, and nearby private properties from the erosive forces of the Snoqualmie River. Despite previous repairs in 2017 and 2018, continued erosion has threatened the stability of the revetment. If left unaddressed, the damage could escalate, leading to more extensive—and costly—repairs in the future.

Sarah Perry, Vice Chair of the King County Flood Control District, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “This repair project is critical to ensuring the safety and stability of our local infrastructure. By addressing erosion now, we are not only protecting the only access road for residents but also preserving the natural habitat of the Snoqualmie River. This investment reflects the King County Flood Control District’s commitment to both community resilience and environmental stewardship.”
Project Goals and Objectives
The primary goals of the Stossel Revetment Major Repair Project include:
- Protect public and private infrastructure – Ensuring the long-term stability of the revetment to maintain road access and prevent property damage.
- Enhance aquatic and riparian habitat – Implementing natural elements that support fish and wildlife.
- Minimize long-term maintenance needs and life-cycle costs – Constructing a durable, resilient structure to reduce future repair requirements.
Project Scope and Approach

The upcoming construction will focus on reconstructing and reinforcing the existing revetment while integrating habitat-friendly design features. Key elements of the project include:
- Revetment reinforcement – Rebuilding and strengthening the right bank revetment to provide durable, long-term protection against erosion.
- Incorporation of log structures – These natural wood features will improve habitat quality while helping to stabilize the riverbank.
- Enhancing toe protection – Reinforcing the lower portions of the revetment to mitigate future erosion and increase habitat complexity, particularly in areas repaired in 2017 and 2018.
Site Conditions and Urgency
Over time, ongoing erosion has steadily weakened the revetment, putting critical infrastructure at risk. In 2020, additional damage was identified, underscoring the need for immediate action to prevent more severe issues. The probability of further erosion remains high, which could jeopardize road access and increase repair costs if the project is delayed.

Recreational Considerations
While the project area experiences low recreational use, as noted in a 2013 River Recreation Study, some jet ski and fishing boat activity has been observed. The construction team will take steps to minimize any disruptions for those who enjoy the Snoqualmie River for recreation.
Looking Ahead
Construction for the Stossel Revetment Major Repair Project is anticipated to take place later this year. This essential work will not only reinforce a critical infrastructure asset but will also incorporate environmentally conscious solutions to enhance the river’s natural habitat. By investing in these repairs now, the King County Flood Control District is ensuring the long-term resilience of the Stossel Bridge Right Bank Revetment while supporting the health of the Snoqualmie River ecosystem.
